Here at Chocogram, we absolutely love the notion of celebration and feel like it’s an integral part of our business. We love to spread holiday cheer and relish in festive preparations which is why we take pleasure in creating such an extensive  X-mas collection. To us, Christmas is a time to come together, exchange gifts and be grateful for all that we have. After all, tis the season to be jolly and surely there’s nothing that gets us merrier than chocolate! But, did you know that our favourite sweet treat has a long-standing Christmas association? In this post, we’ll delve into how and why chocolate has become a staple on every Christmas list.

The Winter Solstice

Even since Neolithic times, we have banded together in the colder months. The tradition of gift-giving has its roots in pagan customs too. It was during these dark days that people would take comfort in sharing and passing on an array of different items. Although the chocolatey packages we receive today wouldn’t have been in the mix, it goes to show that wholesome amiability during wintertime has been around for many ages.

The 3 Wise Men

We, of course, all know the much-cherished story of Balthazar, Melchior and Gaspar, the illustrious three wise men adorning baby Jesus with the gifts of Frankincense, Gold and Myrrh. It is the second of these speciality items that is thought to have inspired the chocolate coins that we now pinch off the tree in the lead up to Christmas. There’s just simply nothing like peeling off sparkly gold foil to find a crisp chocolate coin. Although we spend a lot of money at Christmas rendering ourselves well and truly broke, with this little shining delight we become instead rich with nostalgia and seasonal glee!

The Log

The humble log wood would keep people toasty and warm in the Middle Ages.  As time passed, the log became quite the symbol and a spark of inspiration! Everyone started making pastries in log shapes and decorated them with a range of sweets. Today to match their rustic colour and for its delicious taste, chocolate has become the principal, choice ingredient for this yule time treat.  Although in the Southern hemisphere we’re out roasting on the BBQ down the beach for Chrissie, instead of being wrapped up in front of a fire, a chocolate log is still an indulgent and rather interesting dessert to enjoy.

The Modern Day - Advent Calendars and Selection boxes

Fast forward to our recent history and chocolate is now a Christmas craze! Advent calendars are classically composed of candles and religious scenery, first developed by the German Lutherans in the 19th century. The versions we’ve come to love today were first designed and printed in the early 20th century again by a German and little doors and candies were added.

Selection boxes were created by British industry giants Cadbury and Rowntree’s. Consumers would collect their bounty of chocolate by using their Christmas Club savings account. Nowadays, they’re a favourite on the list to Santa with children receiving on average 6 selection boxes every year!
