Have you ever wondered what the difference is between milk, white and dark chocolate? Perhaps you have a firm favourite? Perhaps you like to dabble between all three? While all three types share some similarities, there are also some key differences.

Read on to discover how milk, white and dark chocolate differ.

What is chocolate?

Chocolate began its journey as a chocolate drink before becoming the chocolate bars we know and love today.  In all forms, chocolate derives from cocoa beans, and depending on which type is being made, the amount of cocoa added to the recipe will differ and, in the case of white chocolate, it is cocoa butter rather than solids.

However, when it comes to milk, white and dark chocolate, it's not just about the way it tastes, although this is of course important. Depending on the type of chocolate you choose, there are some healthier options. Some are even considered good for you in moderation, so if you ever needed an excuse to buy more chocolate, you have one!

How does the flavour change?

If you have a super-sweet tooth, you're somewhere in the middle, or you like a more bitter taste, you will find a type of chocolate that suits you best. Let's take each type of chocolate and discover just how they differ and why.

Milk chocolate

Arguably, milk chocolate is the most common chocolate produced and consumed. It has a creamy texture and is less bitter than dark chocolate, yet less sweet than white. Perhaps this middle ground chocolate is what gives it its popularity?

Milk chocolate is created by mixing chocolate liquor, cocoa butter, sugar, whole milk and other flavourings to create the treat we know and love.

White chocolate

Unlike milk and dark chocolate, white chocolate doesn't have cocoa solids in it and has a lovely white colour, which accounts for its name. Instead of cocoa solids, white chocolate is made from cocoa butter, along with milk and sugar. You may also find that vanilla is added to white chocolate to improve the flavour. In some ways, because of the lack of cocoa solids, white chocolate isn’t really chocolate at all! Nevertheless, it still has that delicious aroma of cocoa and tastes wonderful.

White chocolate gives you the sweetest form of chocolate, but just beware that it also contains the most calories and it is generally considered less good for you. That said, white chocolate can be enjoyed in small amounts, so you don't have to feel guilty when you indulge now and again.

Dark chocolate

Dark chocolate gets its beautiful colour because it is usually made without any milk. Therefore, this chocolate is generally suitable for vegans but, obviously, it can be enjoyed by anyone!

Other ingredients include cocoa solids, cocoa butter and sugar. Combined, this creates a rich flavour with some sweetness, yet a more bitter flavour than milk and white chocolate. For this reason, it is often more popular with adults, with children usually tending to prefer either white or milk chocolate.

Which is the best chocolate to enjoy?

When it comes to choosing which type of chocolate you want to buy for someone or consume yourself, milk chocolate is often a safe option, particularly if you don’t know what they like. If you do, then you can choose their favourite.

If you want to choose the healthiest option, dark chocolate is known for its antioxidant properties, which can lower blood pressure and improve blood flow. What’s more, it is also full of fibre, so you can go ahead and enjoy moderate amounts guilt-free!
